A year ago, Ally was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and, as a result of this condition, she could no longer perform common daily activities. Her husband, Marcos, has been there to support her even though he himself has been struggling with PTSD. At the end of the year 2022, both Ally and Marcos became involved with a local cat rescue effort; and, before they knew it, the cats became therapy. There were so many sheltered cats at the center which provided comfort, love and nourishment. During their time with the rescue, it became clear that many adoptees who visited the rescue center were kitten focused. The cats who were four years and older were being identified as too old.

Merlin was one of those cats. He became Ally’s and Marcos’ presumed 14 year old baby. He was surrendered by a family who was moving away. At that time they claimed he was 7 years old. Although he had been part of a great rescue and was well taken care of; unfortunately, he became sad being in an adoption center for over two months. He was overlooked as he could not compete with kittens. People would ask to see Merlin; however, when Ally introduced him to the adoptees; they were reluctant, impatient, and unable to understand that Merlin was depressed and needed just a little bit of extra love and affection. Merlin was shedding and had really bad dandruff. Due to stress and depression, he had been over-grooming his legs to the point that he had no hair. Ally and Marcos finally had enough and agreed to take him home.  If there was someone who was truly interested in adopting Merlin, they could reach out to Ally directly or to the rescue center. While observing Merlin at home, Ally realized that he needed certain required materials to survive and live well, such as a heating pad and steps. It also became evident to Ally that Merlin did not have the agility of a seven year old cat. When Merlin was taken to the vet, it was confirmed he was at least 14 years old.  They were sadly informed that he may live another few months or at most, a few years. At the present time, Ally proudly says: “Merlin is now in his fourth month with us and is enjoying his daily routines. He has fur on his legs, no more dandruff, and enjoys the company of other cats.  He not only properly grooms himself, but grooms others as well. He definitely has his days where he is a grumpy old man, but he loves cuddle time and playing with his feather sticks.”
